Golden Handcuffs

Golden Handcuffs
By: Linda A. Long

Chained
By you
My possessive master
I’ve been broken
Into being
Your follower
Your disciple
I’ve been wooed
By the path
You lined with
Green paper
In God We Trust
I put my beliefs
I gave my faith
Ingrained
In the comfort
You’ve provided me
I fear no way
To set my myself free
Without putting
My own security
And independence at risk
I’ve accepted I shall
Wear my
Golden Handcuffs
Until the day
I’m eligible
To be set free
Until the day
I can return
To where my soul lives
To where my heart lies
On that day
I shall lay down
My golden handcuffs
And finally be free
